Life Events and Your Benefits

During the course of your employment with the USPS, you will go through different changes that can affect your benefits.  When these things happen, you may get an opportunity to change your benefit plans, or you might be required to update your employee profile.  These changes are referred to as "life events".  Some of life events are marriage, divorce, birth of a child, adoption of a child, last dependent child losing insurance coverage, death of a spouse or dependent, name change, change in resident, reassignment or promotion, return to duty after benefits were terminated, restoration to the USPS following military service and a change to or from part-time career employment.  These are just a few examples of the types of changes in your life that can alter your benefits.

If you experience one of these events, you should contact PostalPEOPLE (1-877-477-3273 and select option 5) and request more information.  Each benefit plan has specific rules about specific life events and how they can alter that benefit plan.  Each change has a time frame in which you must make changes.  Shared Services will mail you the appropriate packet for the situation you describe to them.  Follow the instructions in that packet and if necessary, provide documentation of the life event.
